Hace poco en el año 2019, fue que nos enteramos que un venezolano estuvo entre los científicos que ayudó al desarrollo del Programa Lunar Apolo de la Agencia Espacial Estadounidense (NASA).
Pese a que la información se mantuvo oculta, fue en ese año que el organismo estadounidense -NASA- publicó en el Servidor de su Programa de Información Científica y Técnica (NTRS), los tres primeros estudios realizados por el astrofísico venezolano, Héctor Rojas (1928-1991) entre agosto de 1966 y diciembre de 1969, como parte de su trabajo en el Apolo.
Pierre Monteagudo, es el biógrafo del doctor Rojas, quien se ha dedicado a reivindicar la memoria póstuma de uno de los investigadores más importantes de Hispanoamérica.
En una conversación con Versión Final, este especialista, que conoció personalmente al doctor Rojas, amigo de su padre y llegó a compartir cartas con él, explicó que la planificación del trabajo de Rojas en la NASA deja claro en el tercero de esos informes, que su análisis para garantizar la seguridad de los astronautas durante las caminatas lunares constaba de ocho estudios selenográficos con una descripción detallada de las características de la región ecuatorial de la Luna y de las zonas designadas para el aterrizaje de las misiones tripuladas.

Rojas nació el 10 de junio de 1928 en el Zulia y creció en Maracay (Aragua). Se graduó en la Sorbona de París, el 7 de junio de 1956, con la máxima distinción otorgada en ese país, mention tres honorable (summa cum laude). Posteriormente obtuvo el doctorado en astrofísica.
Sus investigaciones en el Observatorio de París – Meudon (Francia), la Institución Carnegie de Washington D.C., y el Instituto Tecnológico de Monterrey, en el Estado de Nuevo León (México), en asociación con el Pan American College, en Edinburg (Texas) lo llevaron a incorporarse como científico del Programa Lunar Apolo, de la NASA.
Monteagudo dijo: «Si los soviéticos hubieran tenido acceso a los informes de Rojas podrían haber alunizado antes que los estadounidenses«.
Su muerte al parecer sucedió en «extrañas circunstancias». «Está rodeada de un manto de misterio y no tenemos ni la certeza de dónde se encuentra su tumba», apuntó su biógrafo.
